A few weeks ago my wife and I went to a Shania Twain concert. She did more than
sing; she interacted. Shania made the concert an experience. More speakers need
to do the same.
For the most part we share verbally, and people listen, but we can do more than
that can't we? Why don't we create an experience for the audience?
1. Smile with your eyes. Don't just look toward people, interact visually with
them. Allow your eyes to be filled with the emotion you're feeling at the moment.
When you look into the eyes of individual audience members, they will feel what
you say, not just hear what you say.
Caution: Throttle your emotion. Over the top eye smiling can make you look like
a psycho and create a barrier.
2. Use people when possible. Whether in a role play, a physical example, or as
part of a demonstration, using the audience will help you connect. Shania went
into the crowd and sang with some children - the arena went crazy. How can you
put people in your presentations?
Caution: Never do anything that would embarrass a participant.
3. Q & A. If the setting allows, then take some questions from the audience.
This lets you ensure that you share information that is specifically relevant
to individual needs.
Caution: You need to be able to think on your feet and possess a broad knowledge
base of your subject. Saying "I don't know" too many times will ruin the credibility
of the information already shared.
Have an AWESOME day!
