Before saying a word on the platform narrow your objective. What is it that you
want to happen as a result of your speech or presentation? In the past week I've
consulted with three top level executives, two attorneys, and four mainstream
employees. Each heavily depend on their presentation skills.
Amazingly, only one had a real clue about the specific impact desired from the
presentations they were developing. For the most part the clients felt the information
or ideas needed to be shared, but they could not list definitive changes that
needed to result. They all had a vague idea of what they would like to happen,
but 8 out of 9 could not provide succinct specifics.
Real change will only take place within the context of a presentation filled
with content, purpose, and passion tied directly to a precise outcome. None of
those aspects can be accidental. You must know specifically the desired influence
or impact of your speech, then plan every word to support and move people toward
the change required.
Speeches and presentations that create real change require real work. It's not
as easy as forming an outline and surviving the allotted time.
The question I posed for my clients, I now ask you, "Do you want to share a few
nice words and just get through the presentation, or do you want to create real
change?" Once you answer that question the true value of your speech will be revealed,
and the way you prepare will be altered.
Have an AWESOME week!
