How is your continuing speaker's education going? This week alone I discovered
two new techniques to immediately add to my arsenal. My public speaking education
began as the valedictorian of the sixth grade (couldn't repeat for my senior high
years!). I still remember the points of the speech, and have been learning about
speaking ever since.
It's been 25 years since that keynote address, but this is no time to put on
the mental brakes. There's still much more to learn and apply.
How about you? Here are a few tips to help you attain a masters or doctorate
in speaking.
1. Stay alert to communication styles. This includes listening to other speakers,
but pay closer attention to people on the street. Watch their gestures and body
expressions. Learn how people communicate naturally without a performance mentality.
2. Journal your journey. Write down every aspect of speaking that hits you. It
might seem small and insignificant, but write it down anyway. You never know when
that tidbit will come to your rescue.
3. Tap into emotional connection. When you find yourself laughing or crying with
a speaker ask yourself why you feel that way. When someone connects with you it's
not an accident. There is a principle behind it. Locate the reasons certain speakers
connect on an emotional level and apply the same power to your presentations.
Have an AWESOME week!
