1. Actively speaking. Ask for the calendar. If the person is no longer speaking and presenting use him/her as a resource, but not a coach. In today's high-tech, high-touch world you need someone active in the industry.
2. Able to attend a live presentation with you. While a coach can learn a lot from watching a video of you speaking, he can learn more by watching the audience while you're speaking. On video, you get to hear the laughter, but in person you get to see the physical reaction. Did he just laugh, or bend over holding his stomach?
3. Expensive. This is what most people don't want to hear, but there is a correlation between money and results. The more expensive coaches have more experience, work with higher quality clients, and cater to the client. Putting a coach on retainer would allow you to call him or her on relatively short notice and gain personalized attention.
Here's all you need for the cheap man's coach...
1. A friend who is always telling you about something he or she saw or heard. It means they are attentive to what is happening around them.
2. Someone who enjoys watching people and is able to tell you what people are going though just by their body language. I have a friend who took one look around our waiting area in the airport and said, "The lady in green is watching the man in red. She's about to get security." His prophecy came true 60 seconds later.
3. Ask this person to sit in on your speech or presentation. Tell him to write down everything you do best, everything you do worst, and what you said or did during the audience's most responsive times.
