The Apprentice
If you're a fan or viewer of "The Apprentice," then you witnessed in last night's episode what all presenters have experienced - panic and choking.
Angie admitted that she did the worst presentation of her life. But you know what? She survived. She appeared on television and talk shows today and communicated well.
Here are some thoughts...
1. Stress. Controllable or uncontrollable factors can highly impact your ability to perform. The stress from being late, and her team not having all the fashion items, clouded her mind.
Chances are high that we will face some unforeseen stress when speaking. Prepare yourself ahead of time with that knowledge. Everything cannot be controlled.
2. Organization. Angie tried to read from her notes, but they appear disjointed and out of order. The opposing team was highly prepared and smooth.
Part of the reason for Angie's struggle was that she had too much on her plate during the task. When you are preparing for a presentation do you take the time to get fully organized? Is everything in place, or are you rushing about at the last minute?
3. Reflection. "That was the worst presentation I've ever given." Angie knew the exact level of her performance. She stated it as fact, not as failure. She didn't take it personal. Can you reflect on your presentation without beating yourself up?
4. Growth. Trump used words like failure, loser, and choke. Whew! That would be tough to listen to, yet my assessment is that Angie will use those words to become...stronger, more successful, and a clearer communicator. Why? Because deep down she knows that is not her. Those words might describe a few moments, but they do not describe her. Are you guilty of letting a few moments knock you out?
Angie learned more from that one experience than she could have learned in a year's worth of speaker association meetings. Funny how we learn more from failure than success. It's strange that we fear something so greatly that can teach us so much.
